Risk Based Safety Management
Safety Management is a number of systematic activities to control safety. The safety management in an organisation can be reactive, by implementing safety measures after an accident or incident has occurred, or it can be proactive. A proactive approach for safety management implies realisation of actions ahead of accidents and incidents. The trade-off between reactive and proactive actions in safety work defines whether the company has a risk based or an event based approach for safety management. SINTEF assists clients in implementing safety management systems.
Risk based safety management include the following elements:
- Definition of safety goals and risk acceptance criteria
- Hazard identification and risk analysis
- Accident/ incident reporting and investigation of causes and contributing factors
- Implementing safety measures and evaluation of effects
- Safety review of rules/regulations and work practice.
An adequate safety level implies a balance between methods/tools and procedures applied in safety management, and safety culture, focusing participation, co-operation and learning.
