Accident Investigation
In safety management the purpose of accident investigation is to prevent other accidents from occurring, not to blame. To fulfil this aim the root causes have to be revealed and corrective actions implemented. Thus, SINTEF have participated in the investigation of a number of accidents and incidents (near misses) in aviation, as well as in shipping and the rail industry.

Investigating so-called "organisational accidents" requires competence in subjects like:

  • investigation methods
  • safety management
  • quality management
  • organisation theory
  • human factors
  • man-machine adaptation etc.

Due to the broad competence present in SINTEF/NTNU we are in a unique position to assist in complex accident investigations. Some of the well-known public investigations or lawsuits we have assisted in are mentioned below:

Aircraft accidents

  • The Partnair accident 1989
  • The SAS DC 9 "Gissur Viking" accident 1987
