SINTEF has extensive expertise and experience in the field of power distribution grid analysis. Our experience and assignments range from the modelling and design of small and isolated electricity supply plants to detailed stability analyses of the interlinked Nordic power distribution grid.
As part of our research projects we employ a variety of analytical and simulation tools, depending on which issues and grids are to be analysed. A major component of these activities also includes the development and adaptation of our own modelling tools. SINTEF has excellent laboratory facilities for the development and testing of system components and control systems, e.g. based on power electronics

Some examples of current topics and activities within the fields of power distribution systems and distribution grid analysis are :
- Analysis of operational security and stability within the Nordic power distribution system (the transmission grid).
- Analysis of reliability and voltage quality within the distribution grid.
- Large-scale integration of wind power. Modelling, distribution grid analysis and control design.
- Development of control systems for isolated and distributed systems.
- Stability analyses for isolated power distribution systems, e.g. on offshore installations.
