Our research group contributes to a society where we can trust all electronic services and those we communicate with, and where we can easily act upon our privacy preferences.
Information security involves ensuring that information is only available to those who are authorized to see it (confidentiality), that the accuracy of data is maintained (integrity), and that IT systems and other facilities are present and usable when and where they are needed (availability).
We are continuously looking for partners to future projects. If you need research assistance in your projects, or if you have a great idea for a research project – don’t hesitate to contact us!
Secure software engineering
Software security is the practice of building software to be secure and to function properly under malicious attack. The main challenge when building secure systems is having a systematic approach to security throughout the entire development cycle – during the phases of requirement engineering, design, implementation, testing, maintenance, and further development. We develop methods and tools that support such an approach.
Identity management and usage control
Identity and access control management is becoming increasingly important as the use of distributed services and exchange of sensitive information are increasing. The ability to restrict and control information is of paramount importance in order for businesses to fully utilize the potential of cooperation and information exchange. We develop solutions to an efficient and holistic identity and access control management.
Social networks, executive work, internal company systems, medical records – electronic storage, sharing and transfer of personal information make collaboration and communication more efficient. They also imply major information security challenges. The user himself/herself must be able to exercise control on own information, while the system at the same time can not assume the user to have the complete responsibility. We develop technology contributing to enhanced privacy protection.
Communication changes the world – but blind trust is unfortunately not the path to Nirvana. In a society with big and small computers in every corner, the need for secure communication and secure access to networks is ever increasing. SINTEF also researches methods for after-the-fact detecting and responding to attacks.
