Video security surveillance systems
Video surveillance systems are crucial in protecting areas of vital importance like banks and airports. SINTEF has since 1992 collaborated with Detec A/S in developing their automatic video surveillance systems.
DETEC A/S is a major Norwegian vendor of automatic video surveillance systems for the professional markets. The images from the surveillance cameras are analysed continuously in order to detect events that meet specified alarm criteria. When an irregular event is detected an alarm is sent to the, possibly remotely located, control centre together with a corresponding video sequence. The guard is thus notified when irregular activities are detected in the scene, thus freeing the guard from "tedious" watching of monitors.
To achieve reliable detection in complex outdoor and indoor scenes with a minimum of false alarms is very challenging, and there is significant international ongoing research in this area. SINTEF is continuously working with DETEC to improve their algorithms and hardware platforms, among others within the EU capability project “ADABTS – Detection of abnormal behaviour in crowds”.
