Thermodynamics
Thermodynamics is an extremely powerful tool, applicable to a wide range of materials science and processes.

 With the help of the commercial software tools (e.g., FactSage and Thermo-Calc) and high-quality thermochemical databases, a variety of complicated technical problems can be solved in an efficient and economical way. SINTEF offers core competence in:

• Phase diagram and property diagram (from unary to higher-order system) calculations.
• Thermodynamic properties of substances, compounds, solution phase calculations.
• Complex heterogeneous equilibrium calculation (up to 32 components and 40 solution phases…).
• Scheil-Gulliver solidification simulation and enthalpy evolution.
• Element distribution equilibria.
• Reactor simulations (by taking simple kinetic limitation into account).

• Complex heterogeneous equilibrium simulations for various metallurgical and materials processes
• Consulting services to customers which range from the execution of thermochemical simulations to custom thermodynamic database developments
• Virtual experiment: from raw materials characterization to process optimization, from new idea testing to the specific property measurement (e.g. enthalpy evolution in solidification)
• Thermophysical properties (viscosity, density, surface/interface tension, conductivity, …) of industrial liquids (alloy, slag, salt, …) by coupling thermodynamics with physical properties
